Directions

From Schiphol airport to ...

  • From Schiphol airport you can take a train to 'Amsterdam Central Station' (not to be confused with other stations that have seemingly similar names). The station at the airport is 'in the same building', just follow the signs. The platform from which the trains depart is one floor below ground-level. You have to buy your train ticket before you go to the platform. A ticket to Amsterdam Central Station costs approximately 5 euros. Travel time is about 30 minutes.
  • Alternatively you can take a taxi directly to your hotel. This costs approximately 35-40 euros. Take a taxi from the cue in front of the airport, just follow the signs. If someone offers you a taxi while still in the airport building, you'd better ignore it. Travel time is about 30 minutes.
  • Below you can find directions to the hotels starting at Amsterdam Central Station.

Using the 'strippenkaart'...

  • Public transportation in Amsterdam works with a ticket called the 'strippenkaart' (here is picture of a used one). They can be used for trams, metros and buses, and bought at stations and a variety of stores (supermarkets, tobacco shops, etc.). You can buy a 'strippenkaart' with 15 strips (6,50 Euro) or 45 strips (19,20 Euro) ONLY at stations and stores and tickets with 2 stripes (1,60 Euro) or 3 strips (2,40 Euro) on most trams and buses.
  • Travelling downtown Amsterdam you will mostly travel WITHIN one zone and occasionally two zones. One zone is two strips and two zones three strips. So if you only travel from your hotel to the conference and back for five days you will need 20 strips if your hotel is in the same transport zone (almost all hotels are in the same transport zone as the conference location). Notice that after stamping the ticket you can travel a certain time within the area you stamped it for (e.g. one hour within the city centre, using different buses, etc.)
  • In trams and buses there usually is a conductor, you can tell him/her your destination and the right amount of stripes will be stamped on your ticket. In some trams and in the metro you will have to stamp the ticket yourself. You must leave open the amount of strips equal to the number of zones you are travelling, and stamp the next strip. So, if you are going to travel two zones, you stamp only the third (=number of zones + 1) strip, leaving the two intermediate strips blank. You can travel with multiple persons on one ticket, but you must stamp the right amount of stripes for each person, you should not add the total amount stripes together in one stamp. If you travel together in a group it is most affordable to buy a big strippenkaart with 45 strips, but you have to stay together.
  • At all the stations there are people who can assist you with your tickets or other questions. And remember the people of Amsterdam are very knowledgeable about the city and will mostly be happy to assist you in finding your way.
  • Public transportation is run by the GVB. Visit their web-site for further details.
