Newly launched Qualcomm Diversity in AI Fellowships are awarded to 2 Master’s AI Students at UvA

Qualcomm Technologies launched this academic year the Qualcomm Diversity in AI Fellowships targeted at female candidates who were accepted in the Master’s AI programme.

Qualcomm Technologies is awarding the two €10,000 fellowships to Isabella Gardner and Despoina Touska, who both commenced their studies in the 2023-24 academic year. Besides the fellowship, each winner receives mentorship from Qualcomm AI Research engineers. Both students have notable academic and non-academic achievements in their early career in AI.

With the mission to increase representation and participation by supporting promising scholars from underrepresented groups in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning research, Qualcomm Technologies collaborated closely with the ELLIS unit Amsterdam, which is positioned strategically at the University of Amsterdam, to design and launch the new fellowship. The Master’s AI Programme was also involved in this year’s selection process.

The Qualcomm Diversity in AI Fellowships are administered by the Amsterdam University Fund (AUF), which has established student grants and other subsidies made possible through the contribution of financial supporters of the UvA throughout the years.

Qualcomm Technologies has been a key industry player in the region, and one of the strongest supporters of the ELLIS unit Amsterdam. The company has sponsored the ELLIS unit Amsterdam’s Travel Grants for several years, enabling Master’s AI students to attend top-tier conferences where their research on AI and ML are published.
