New PhD student at the Amsterdam unit

The Amsterdam unit welcomes Joris Baan, its first academic ELLIS PhD student. Joris will start in October, working with Raquel Fernández and Barbara Plank on advancing performance on language understanding tasks and shedding new light on interpretability questions, drawing inspiration from the way humans process language using gaze data. He is generally interested in research at the intersection of machine learning and language and has worked on compositionality and interpretability before. Recently, he became more interested in probabilistic models and uncertainty estimation. He also likes software engineering and hiking.

Welcome Joris!
