NeurIPS Fest 2023: testament to the high caliber of research excellence within Amsterdam’s thriving AI ecosystem

On December 7th, a vibrant gathering of over 100 individuals marked the success of the NeurIPS Fest 2023 hosted by the ELLIS unit Amsterdam, the unit’s second successful organization of the NeurIPS poster preview party.

Set against the backdrop of Lab42, the heart of digital innovation in Amsterdam, the event was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Cees Snoek, Director of the ELLIS unit Amsterdam. This edition of the NeurIPS Fest 2023 is unique featuring pre- and post-NeurIPS Conference poster sessions held simultaneously across 11 ELLIS units throughout Europe. These units are Barcelona, Cambridge, Darmstadt, Edinburgh, Helsinki, Lausanne, Manchester, Milan, Trento, Tüebingen, Warsaw, and Zurich.

The scientific festivities commenced with a captivating keynote presentation by Prof. Dr. Juergen Gall from the University of Bonn. He gave an insightful overview of his recent research in the realm of anticipating human motion. This included Social Diffusion, a groundbreaking approach for short-term and long-term forecasting of the motion of multiple individuals and their social interactions.

The NeurIPS Fest 2023 featured an exhibition of 40 posters accepted at the NeurIPS Conference 2023. These posters were a testament to the high caliber of research excellence within Amsterdam’s thriving AI ecosystem. The showcased research covered a diverse array of topics within the landscape of AI, with several outcomes stemming from international collaborations between Amsterdam researchers and their counterparts worldwide.

The poster session provided an interactive platform for attendees to discuss the latest Machine Learning research and foster connections, all while enjoying bites and drinks. The event garnered positive feedback from a diverse audience, including Master’s students, PhD candidates, faculty members, industry researchers, and local startups.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who played a role in making this event a resounding success — from the esteemed keynote speaker, Prof. Dr. Juergen Gall, to the poster presenters, and the enthusiastic attendees.
