Deep Learning Extravaganza: connecting different themes within the AI landscape

As the Artificial Intelligence landscape continues to progress rapidly, the need for communities that can offer a constructive space to acknowledge, celebrate, and have critical conversations on the latest research becomes paramount. As such, the ELLIS unit Amsterdam collaborated with the Deep Thinking Hour organized a paper preview party, Deep Learning Extravaganza which was held on June 8th, 2023 at Lab42.

The event was opened by Prof. dr. Cees Snoek, the Director of ELLIS unit Amsterdam, who warmly welcomed all the attendees and briefly introduced the ELLIS unit Amsterdam. The event was followed by an insightful presentation ‘Is there a place for Representation Learning in Generative AI?’ by the keynote speaker, Jakub M. Tomczak, an Associate Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology.

Following the fruitful convention of the NeurIPS Fest 2022 which positively contributed to more critical conversations and bridged networks within the AI ecosystem in Amsterdam, the ELLIS unit Amsterdam curated 26 papers focusing on different themes. These papers are published in 2023 at top-tier conferences and journals of machine learning, which includes the following:

  •  the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) 2023;
  •  the International Conference on Learning Representation (ICLR) 2023;
  •  the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) 2023;
  •  the European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR) 2023;
  •  the International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (AAMAS) 2023;
  •  the Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval (SIGIR) Conference 2023;
  •  the Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence (UAI) 2023.

At the Deep Learning Extravaganza’s poster presentation session, these outstanding researches were showcased and ignited discussions among different communities within the Amsterdam AI ecosystem, including Masters students, PhD candidates, Postdocs, faculty members, industry researchers, and local startups.

ELLIS unit Amsterdam strives to serve as an avenue to facilitate healthy debate and exchange of ideas, and nurturing the spirit of innovation.
