The ELLIS Amsterdam Unit continues to support and promote local excellence in Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Through sponsorship of Qualcomm Technologies Inc., ELLIS Amsterdam Unit provides travel grants for Bsc and Msc students of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) to present their papers at top-tier ML or AI conferences. A more detailed description and information on the application procedure for the Amsterdam ELLIS Unit BSc/MSc Travel Grant can be found here.
This year, we have awarded travel grants to twelve excellent MSc AI students of UvA whose papers are accepted at top-tier conferences, including (i) the European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV) 2022, (ii) the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) 2022, and (iii) the Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP) 2022.
We are pleased to fund the following students to present their works (in alphabetical order):
- Chase van de Geijn, Reproducibility study for “Explaining in Style: Training a GAN to explain a classifier in StyleSpace” (the NeurIPS 2022)
- David Vos, “Towards Parameter-Efficient Automation of Data Wrangling Tasks with Prefix-Tuning” (the NeurIPS 2022)
- Floor Eijkelboom, “Reproduction Study of Variational Fair Clustering” (the NeurIPS 2022)
- Jaap Stefels, “[Re] Replication Study of “Fairness and Bias in Online Selection” (the NeurIPS 2022)
- John Goudouras, “[Re] Exacerbating Algorithmic Bias through Fairness Attacks” (the NeurIPS 2022)
- Maks Kulicki, “Strategic classification made practical: reproduction” (the NeurIPS 2022)
- Matteo Tafuro, “[Re] Exacerbating Algorithmic Bias through Fairness Attacks” (the NeurIPS 2022)

In order to further demonstrate our commitment to strengthening the AI ecosystem in Amsterdam, and promoting our local talent, we are organizing the NeurIPS Fest 2022 at the Lab42 of UvA on Thursday, 24 November 2022. The event is a preview party with posters, drinks, and bites, showcasing the latest and greatest machine learning research that is happening in the Amsterdam AI Ecosystem and will be presented at the NeurIPS Conference 2022. Visit the NeurIPS Fest page to see the posters which will be showcased. Register now (free of charge)!
