The European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) is dedicated to advancing machine learning research and fostering collaboration among top-tier researchers in different fields within the AI landscape. One key way ELLIS encourages excellence and diversity is through the annual nomination of ELLIS Fellows and Scholars.
Becoming an ELLIS Fellow or Scholar is a significant achievement. It represents scientific excellence, a commitment to societal impact, and global collaboration. The nomination process emphasizes fairness, diversity, and rigorous evaluation, ensuring that those selected are leaders in their field and contribute to the ELLIS Society’s vision.
By recognizing top researchers and fostering an inclusive, global community, ELLIS continues to drive advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence, creating opportunities for groundbreaking innovations that benefit both science and society.
The ELLIS Fellows are distinguished senior researchers who have made notable contributions to science and are dedicated to serving as ambassadors for ELLIS. They are anticipated to provide strategic guidance and leadership not only in scientific matters but also regarding the development and expansion of ELLIS.
The ELLIS Scholars play critical roles in the continued advancement of the AI and ML fields. These scholars are often at the cutting edge of new research and emerging technologies, contributing to breakthroughs in areas like deep learning, natural language processing, reinforcement learning, and more. As early-career researchers, they are poised to become the next generation of academic leaders.
The ELLIS Members can be nominated to become ELLIS Fellows and Scholars through nominations from the ELLIS Units/Sites and the ELLIS Research Programs. ELLIS is powered by various highly innovative research units across Europe. Each unit focuses on specific areas of research in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Researchers affiliated with these units can be nominated based on their contributions and expertise in the field. Similarly, the members of ELLIS work on different research topics, which means nominations from these programs are made for scholars and fellows who have made significant contributions within these research domains.
Each nominated candidate for ELLIS Fellow or ELLIS Scholar is assessed by two reviewers who are current ELLIS Fellows working in a different country and possess a different nationality than the candidate. One of the core values of ELLIS is its commitment to diversity, which enriches the research environment and fosters a more inclusive and innovative scientific community. The reviewers of the nominations assign scores based on three criteria, which are; scientific excellence, societal impact, and relationship to ELLIS.
We are pleased to share the results of the ELLIS unit Amsterdam nominations. The AI and ML scientists who have officially become ELLIS Fellows and Scholars via the nominations of the Amsterdam unit submitted by the unit Director and ELLIS Fellow, Prof. Dr. Cees Snoek, are, as follows:
The ELLIS Society annually issues calls for Fellows & Scholars, which will be published on the ELLIS website and promoted via the network’s social media channels and newsletter. Only directors of ELLIS Programs and Sites can nominate potential Fellows & Scholars, and every proposed candidate goes through an evaluation process by the ELLIS Fellow committee.
