Reflections from the Panel on Diversity, Inclusion, and AI

On June 3, 2025, we hosted the second edition of our panel on Diversity, Inclusion, and AI at Lab42, Amsterdam—and what an inspiring evening it was!

With voices from academia, business, and civil society, the panel explored how we can ensure inclusivity is built into AI systems. We thanked our esteemed panelists; Hazar Harmouch (University of Amsterdam), Micky Chen (HerFuture), Quirine van Eeden (Rathenau Instituut), and Siân Brooke (University of Amsterdam). Each panelist brought a unique perspective on the ethical, technical, and societal challenges posed by current AI systems—and more importantly, on the steps we can take to improve them.

The panel tackled some of the intriguing questions on the topic:

-Is AI really fostering a more inclusive society—or reinforcing inequality?

-What role should policymakers, educators, and developers play?

-How do we design datasets and systems that reflect diverse perspectives?

-What steps can we take—technically and politically—to address bias?

We thanked the Inclusive AI Board Members who have crafted an insightful program for the evening Filiz (Fina) Polat, Teresa Liberatore, Isabella Venancia Gardner, Gabrielle Poerwawinata, Xin Zhou, and everyone who contributed to the conversation whose insights helped spark meaningful dialogue and new ideas. We wrapped up the evening with a borrel and networking.

The ELLIS unit Amsterdam is committed to making this happen and providing a platform for these conversations, particularly through the Inclusive AI Program. For more information about the program, you can read it here.
