DynaLearn successfully presented at NABS 2011

DynaLearn was successfully presented at the NABS 2011 meeting in Providence within the special session Promoting evidence-based methods in environmental research and management by BOKU as multi-level tool for causal integration of evidence based data collections. As currently causal data integration is mainly done by static box-flow diagrams with links of evidence (see ‘The Causal Analysis/Diagnosis Decision Information System – CADDIS’), DynaLearn aims at providing a dynamic framework for building and sharing evidence based causal models via an online repository. It became clear, that the DynaLearn features developed so far have high potential to be also applied for professional and interactive data integration and decision support.

Second evaluation activities in Bulgaria

Two weeks ago, IBER ran an evaluation study researching knowledge transfer between topics by learning system thinking. The participants were 10 students from the Mathematic High School in Sofia. The students were given texts about biodiversity and urbanization and asked to identify the key concepts, distinguish between the structure and behavior of the system, and recognize the important processes. The students then proceeded to model the concepts in the text in the DynaLearn software. After the modeling session, the students were able to identity more of the key concepts, not only in a text about the same topic, but also in texts about different topics. This result seems to indicate that learning system thinking using DynaLearn teaches analytical skills, such as detecting key concepts, which can then transfer to new topics.

DynaLearn @ ISEI7

Multiple aspects of  the DynaLearn project are presented at the 7th International Conference on Ecological Informatics (ISEI7) which takes place from 13th to 17th December 2010 in Gent, Belgium. DynaLearn’s beneficiaries will give insight to the project from different points of view in several presentation slots during the event. Additionally theory moves towards practice in our software Demo session on 16th December morning.

DynaLearn as favorite example of BOKU research

The Austrian DynaLearn-Team presents the Dynalearn project on January 18, 2011 as an favorite example of the BOKU research pool. The DynaLearn project was selected by the BOKU`s center of education togehter with the students union. Aim of lecture is to present the DynaLearn approach to bachelor and master students  delivering insights into research, methods and practice of up-to-date scientific educational work.

DynaLearn @ IVA 2010

DynaLearn is presented at the 10th International Conference on Intelligent Virtual Agents during September 20-22, 2010. The conference takes place in Philadelphia, USA.

Gregor will present our work on the design of multiple pedagogical agents and their roles for the interactive learning environment of DynaLearn. He will introduce our set of virtual hamsters and explain how they come to life in different educational roles and teaching scenarios. Furthermore SceneMaker will be shown as an authoring tool for behaviour and interaction management of virtual agents.

DynaLearn presented to Beta Partners

Beta partners refers to a set of high schools in the Amsterdam region that collaborate with the University of Amsterdam on science education, particularly on interesting and motivating learners to select science courses and curricula (when going to study at a university). The schools also collaborate on using new technology to support and enhance education.
During two sessions on April 26th and 27th, 2010 DynaLearn presented the basic idea of the project and discussed with teachers the opportunities to use DynaLearn in the classroom once the software is available.

New team member @ UAU

Universität Augsburg welcomes our student Simon Flutura who will work on the virtual character designs the next few months. Simon has some experience in modeling and will extend and improve our existing set of 3D models.  He will complete our collection of animations as well as he will add new expressions to stock up our graphical character repertoire. Another target will be the transfer of the hamster models into our realtime 3D engine Horde 3D.

Markus Häring, one of our student researchers for the DynaLearn project, just started his Master Thesis “Automatenbasierte Dialogsteuerung für Charaktere in intelligenten Lernumgebungen” (State Machine-based Dialog Management for Virtual Characters in Intelligent Learning Environments).

Cristina Kadar from UAU’s Elite Graduate Program “Software Engineering” joined us as a student researcher for the DynaLearn project. Cristina’s work will focus on user / learner modeling in the Virtual Character component.
