Green IT or Green Computing refers to environmentally sustainable computing or IT. It can contribute to a greener world in two ways:
- By creating novel ways to work and live that are less energy consuming. Think of video conferencing instead of travelling large distances to meet in person;
- By improving the modus operandi of ICT itself, making computer systems more energy efficient.
In our group, we are mostly interested in the second aspect. Computer systems today, such as clouds and grids, consume enormous amounts of energy, most of which is generated from environmentally-unfriendly fossil fuels. Moreover, these computer systems are often not utilized effectively, leading to unnecessary waste of energy. In our GreenClouds project, we strive to answer the following question: Can we create a framework for computation on (virtualized) infrastructures that is energy efficient without sacrificing performance?
